Do you need a VPN with a China travel eSIM?
The eSIM label alone cannot answer this. Nomad says its China service allows Google and WhatsApp access through international routing without a separate VPN. We have not tested that statement. Confirm your exact plan and essential apps, and distinguish mobile data from Wi-Fi.
An eSIM profile and a VPN do different jobs
Nomad distinguishes its routing from a traditional VPN, including encryption, and says routes vary by plan. We have not inspected the routes or assessed privacy properties.

Start with the connection you are actually using
| Connection | What to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM mobile data | Exact plan and provider’s current app-access statement | Ask support about the apps and services you need. |
| Hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi | That network’s behavior, separately from the eSIM | Test the same task on mobile data to isolate the connection. |
| Laptop tethered to phone | Hotspot permission, allowance and work-device policies | Confirm the plan’s rules and ask your IT team about work access. |

Prepare around essential tasks
- List the tasks you must complete: contacting a host, accessing bookings or signing in to work.
- Ask the provider about those tasks on the specific China plan, rather than asking whether all apps work.
- Save tickets, addresses and provider instructions offline before departure.
- For work access, confirm your employer’s required security setup and approved connection options.
- Check current local requirements and provider terms before relying on any separate networking service. This guide does not assess its legal status.
If an app will not connect
- Check whether all internet activity fails or just one app.
- Confirm whether the phone is using Wi-Fi or the intended travel data line.
- Check coverage, remaining allowance and validity before changing settings.
- Use the provider’s documented roaming and APN instructions; avoid guessing values.
- Send support your plan name, location, connection type, affected app and error message. Omit passwords and verification codes.
What the evidence cannot tell you
We have no independent app-access, speed, gateway or uptime measurements. Nomad’s claims do not establish behavior on other providers or local Wi-Fi. Treat an essential unanswered question as a reason to contact support.

Common questions
Does eSIM mean a VPN is included?
No. The profile format alone says nothing about an included VPN service. Read the product-specific documentation.
Will the same app always work on Wi-Fi?
Do not assume the mobile-data behavior carries over. The Wi-Fi connection is separate.
Have you tested Google or WhatsApp in China?
No. This guide distinguishes documented provider claims from tests we have not performed.
